Nicole Behan

Nicole Behan is a Director who brings bold stories to life - on stage and beyond.

She is passionate about new writing and developing adaptations which connect audiences with 'here and now'. Her work is rich and multifaceted drawn from ten years of directing for stage and immersive spaces. In 2026 she will stage an adaptation of Frank Clarke's iconic film Letter to Brezhnev and The Scouse Nativity by Kevin Fearon for Liverpool's Royal Court.

Other recent credits include;

Cinderella Shakespeare North Playhouse, The Derby Days Liverpool's Royal Court, and Directing an adaptation of Hanif Kureshi's groundbreaking Oscar Nominated film My Beautiful Laundrette, Leicester Curve with National Theatre's Theatre Nation partnership.

As Artistic Director of Liverpool's Paperwork Theatre, she creates intricate plays and immersive theatre which seeks to create connection and provoke positive change- most recently Lovestruck Liverpool Everyman, Storyhouse & Shakespeare North Playhouse.

Nicole recently completed artistic development through Arts Council England DYCP, bringing  together theatre makers from across the UK to experiment with new work and adaptations for midscale theatre and developing skills in Directing for Screen to support a move into film and TV, with a series of short films planned for 2027.
Nicole's collaborative creative process encourages playfulness and detailed craft. Whether navigating existing texts or offering dramaturgy for new writing- her work seeks to explore form, place and space to allow audiences to become active participants. She works nationally, but is based in Liverpool where she is passionate about profiling regional voices in theatre practice and demystifying the industry for emerging artists.
